Quality is Key

LIDAR captures a wealth of valuable information about the world. In order to maximise value from this data, it needs to be processed using a range of geospatial tools and techniques. Due to the large size of LIDAR datasets, it is often necessary to use cloud computing and parallel processing systems for validation, testing, and reporting of LIDAR point clouds. Some of the aspects to consider when working with LIDAR data include point density, the device scan angle, horizontal and vertical accuracy, and flight line overlap.

High precision

LiDAR is a powerful and established active remote sensing technology which is used to measure the distances to and elevations of features on the earth’s surface. This high precision survey tool can be used to create digital terrain models which accurately distinguish between features on the earth’s surface. Road networks, Power line networks, geological and archaeological features are all easily identified through this technology.

LiDAR can be used to:

  • Detect and map archaeological features below the tree canopy
  • Survey marine areas for coastal erosion, forestry for tree canopy height, and detect geological features such as karst features for the protection of groundwater
  • Assist high precision agricultural activities – inspect slope, aspect, water flow routes, vegetation height and soil erosion rates
  • Generate hi-res Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and Digital Surface Models (DSM) from which derived products such as slope, aspect, river network routes can be obtained
  • Map transportation routes and utility networks. It can also be used for power line and solar mapping projects
  • Undertake stockpile/ volumetric surveys for quarry mapping. Estimates of stockpile volume, height, diameter can be obtained

Return on Investment Today

LIDAR data is captured using terrestrial, airborne, and mobile applications. However the cost of obtaining high resolution LiDAR was high, traditionally. Costs in acquiring these data have dropped substantially while there are constant improvements being made to the technology. As cost continues to drop and point resolution continues to improve, LiDAR can be utilised for making high-resolution maps for multiple applications. Users who obtain these datasets continue to find new ways of incorporating the data into their applications.
